Why sand changes the rules

Desert driving is a tyre-pressure game. Deflating your tyres widens the contact patch and lets the tyre float over soft sand instead of digging in — the difference between cresting a dune and calling for recovery. The lower you go, the better the flotation.

The catch: your tyre is only attached to the wheel by air pressure forcing the bead against the rim. Drop too low, add a hard side-load — a turn on a dune face, a rut at speed — and the bead can pop off the rim. That's a tyre off the wheel in the middle of the desert.

Everything in the beadlock-vs-standard question comes down to one number: the pressure you actually run.

What a beadlock actually does

A true beadlock wheel clamps the tyre's outer bead mechanically between the wheel and a bolted outer ring — typically 24 to 32 bolts. The bead physically cannot slip off, because it's no longer held by air pressure at all. That's what lets experienced desert drivers run very low single-digit pressures — commonly 5–8 PSI — with the tyre staying put through hard side-loads.

The trade-offs are real: beadlocks cost more, weigh more, and the ring bolts must be torque-checked regularly — before and after hard desert use is the discipline. True bolted beadlocks are also generally intended for off-road use, which is why many GCC owners run them as a dedicated desert set.

Skip the beadlock. A quality standard alloy with a proper load rating, aired to 12–15 PSI, handles UAE weekend dunes well — and your money is better spent on the right tyre.
